GTA 6 Extended Look: Full Breakdown of Everything Revealed

My RoleplayAugust 28, 20264 min read

After more than a year of waiting since the second trailer, Rockstar finally gave players a real look at how Grand Theft Auto VI actually plays. Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look premiered exclusively on Netflix on August 27, 2026, running roughly 26 minutes — the longest gameplay presentation Rockstar has ever released — before landing on YouTube for everyone else six hours later. Here's everything worth knowing from it, broken down section by section.

Leonida: The Setting

GTA 6 takes place in Leonida, Rockstar's fictional take on Florida. The map isn't just a rebuilt Vice City — it stretches out to the Leonida Keys (a stand-in for the Miami area), swampland, at least one national park, and a working seaside port. Rockstar's environmental detail is doing a lot of the talking here: lighting filters differently through hair, jewelry, and fabric depending on the scene, which is the kind of small touch that sells a world rather than just a map.

Jason & Lucia

The story follows Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos, a Bonnie-and-Clyde-style pair who stumble into a statewide conspiracy after a heist goes wrong. This is the series' first time giving players a non-optional female protagonist, and the footage splits time between both characters rather than treating Lucia as a side option.

  • Lucia's hairstyle changes between scenes — a subtle way of signaling how much time has passed without a loading screen or title card
  • The pair banter constantly during action, which keeps combat sequences feeling character-driven rather than silent
  • Lucia gets standalone driving and stealth sequences, not just support-character moments
  • Jason and Lucia's relationship is shown through quieter domestic scenes as well as heists — getting ready to go out, watching TV, small talk in the car

Gameplay & Combat

The footage opens mid-job: Jason and Lucia visit a drug crew to pick up product, and the deal turns into a police raid. From there the extended look shows off cover-based shooting, weapon swapping mid-fight, and a bullet-time mechanic that highlights enemies for a cleaner shot. Later in the reel, a car chase brings back the classic maximum Wanted Level — a visible six-star display in the corner of the screen — while Jason leans out a back window with an automatic rifle to take down pursuing cars and a helicopter.

Robbery and hustle gameplay also gets airtime: convenience-store robberies with bandanas pulled up, small-time jobs from old contacts, and a mission where Jason has to fight through a building's security floor by floor while Lucia — without a gun in that scene — improvises a takedown mid-fight.

World Details & Immersion

A lot of the extended look's best moments are small, systemic touches rather than big story beats — the kind of detail that suggests a genuinely dense simulation underneath the map.

  • In-game phones let characters browse a social media feed — yes, you can doomscroll in GTA 6
  • Apartments are fully interactive: characters open fridges, watch in-universe TV ads, and just exist in the space between missions
  • NPCs range from pettable stray dogs to a chihuahua dressed in a tutu with fairy wings during the closing montage
  • Fan boats, base jumping, and club sequences show off traversal and downtime activities outside of missions

Release, Price & Controversy

Grand Theft Auto VI is confirmed for November 19, 2026 on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, with no PC version announced yet — this after one prior delay. The standard edition is priced at $80, with a $100 ultimate edition bundling extra customization content. Rockstar noted the extended look footage was captured entirely on a base PS5, no enhanced hardware.

The reveal also landed in the middle of a rough stretch for Rockstar: backlash over the physical edition shipping as a code-in-a-box with no disc, plus a wave of gameplay leaks in mid-August that Rockstar publicly called heartbreaking while racing to get ahead of them with this extended look.

What This Means Heading Into Launch

With roughly three months left until release, this extended look is likely the last major gameplay showing before launch trailers and reviews take over. For roleplay server communities specifically, the returning 6-star Wanted system, doomscroll-able phones, and heavier environmental interactivity all hint at systems that RP servers built on future GTA 6 mods will likely lean on heavily once modding tools catch up — something worth watching well past November 19.
